What’s New… Tuesday, Aug 18 2009

So now that the IPCPR show is over, everyone is a buzz about all the new stuff on the way.   Details from the show have been posted about all over the blogs and forums so no need to rehash it all here.  These are merely the tidbits I saw that interested me the most.

Cain by Sam Leccia and Oliva.

I am very interested in this cigar. I have heard very good things about it and the fact that it is about 99% ligero is always intriguing. I also find it interesting that Sam has decided to provide a lot of detail about the cigar and its blend with the cigar. A brochure is to be included with each box spilling all the details a cigar enthusiast could want about the cigars. Very cool.

Tatuaje (all of it).

This bullet should come as no surprise to anyone.   There is the Black Tubos, the Verocu Tubos, the Drac, the La Verite, a ton of interesting new Tatuaje swag.  Pete has obviously been busy and of course that hasn’t escaped my notice.

Illusione Nosotros.

Dion’s collaboration with Drew Estate.  After trying the Liga Privada T-52 and seeing first hand that Drew Estate could blend a good traditional cigar, I have become more excited about this little project.

Drew Estate Liga Privada T-52.

I was able to smoke this gem before it was unveiled at the show.  You can read my review here.  I am looking forward to trying the final release and see if they managed to preserve or improve upon the pre-production blend I was able to sample.

Those are the highlights I am most interested in.  There is probably some more stuff I haven’t heard about yet that I am sure I could easily add to this list.   What are you most excited about?

Avo’s 83rd Birthday – Compañero Dinner Monday, Apr 6 2009

My local cigar shop, Empire Cigars, hosted a dinner on Avo Uvezian’s 83rd Birthday tour.  The event was held in downtown Raleigh at Sullivan’s Steak house.  It was an amazing event and a real bargain to attend.  Everyone got dinner, wine, dessert, and 4 free cigars.  The food was amazing.  If you click the picture of my signed menu below you can see what we had.  I went with the Filet which I believe the majority of the men in attendance chose as well.  What’s better than a good steak with cigars?

Of course it was Mr U’s birthday celebration so of course there was Birthday cake. (more…)

NC Smoking Ban Update Wednesday, Mar 18 2009

I received the following communication from a local retailer today. The legislation I wrote about a couple weeks ago is up for a vote to become law. The letter below describes what you can do to help make your voice heard if you disagree with the proposed smoking ban.

To all cigar lovers of North Carolina,

A bill has been proposed in our state to greatly limit your ability to enjoy a cigar in a public place. The bill is HB 2, and will prohibit smoking in all restaurants, bars, and even private clubs. In this email is a link to the official web site of the IPCPR (International Premium Cigar and Pipe Retailers). We have set up the site to empower consumers so they may contact their legislators with ease.

Once you click on the link, simply enter your zip code and you will have access to write your own letter or use one of the templates included. The process is quick and easy, and you can visit the site frequently. I urge you to speak up and let your voice be heard. Our liberties are being taken from us. Our right to enjoy a legal product as adults could be compromised.

I thank you all for your support and your time on this critical issue.

Stop the Smoking Ban in NC!

Here is the link to the IPCPR. http://www.ipcpr.org/legislation.html

I am beginning to think with all the bans and bailouts and general socialization of our society it is time to rename our country to the “Socialist States of America”, or “The United Nanny States”……

NC Making Another Run at a Ban Wednesday, Mar 4 2009

North Carolina Law Makers are making another run at a public smoking ban for the tobacco friendliest state in the union. A bill to ban public smoking passed a North Carolina legislative committee Tuesday March 3rd with bipartisan support although some Republicans balked at what they view as government meddling in the business of restaurants and bars.

In 2005 and in 2007 legislation for smoking bans were defeated in the state. This latest bill still has another committee to get through before it gets put to a vote. The bill, if ultimately passed will ban smoking in the workplace, restaurants and other public places. I was unable to find any more detailed information so I don’t know what (if any) exemptions or potential loopholes this latest ban may contain.

The Twisted Stogie – Culebras Thursday, Oct 23 2008

I have always been intrigued by the Culebra Cigars.  They are a unique sight, 3 small cigars twisted together.  I always wondered what the point was.  What is the history behind this style of cigar?  I came across this short video with James Suckling and David Savona of Cigar Aficionado.  In it they talk about the history of the Culebra while enjoying the new Partagas Culebras. Click Twisted Cigars to watch the video.

Most Culebras are meant to be taken apart and each stick smoked individually.  I have seen one example however of a Culebras that is made to be smoked as one cigar.  It is rolled in such a way that it allows you to smoke all three cigars at once.  It is made by Don Francisco Cigars in East Brunswick NJ.  Here is a photo:

Note how the tips of all three cigars are bound together. This will allow you to smoke them simultaneously or if you’d rather smoke one at a time all you have to do is remove that binding on each end.

Stogies & Bogies Friday, Sep 12 2008

The link between Cigars and Golf is a long standing one.  Golf is a great game that lends itself to the enjoyment of a fine stogie while out enjoying a beautiful day on the links.  As the Anti-Smoking (anti-fun) Zealots get more and more of their socialist Smoking Bans enacted across the nation, the golf course has become one of the last havens outside the home for cigar lovers to go to and enjoy a smoke.  That is why the Stogies & Bogies event being held in the Chicago area next year makes so much sense.  If you like Cigars, Golf, and fine Wine & Spirits you’ll want to check out this event.  Here is the press release about the event.  Check out their website for more info and to get tickets at StogiesandBogies.com

NEW CIGAR SHOW IN THE MIDWEST

Cigar enthusiasts in Illinois have lost the freedom to enjoy a stick with their favorite beverage or after a good steak.  Chicago is no longer home for a consumer cigar show.    In fact about the only place you can still smoke a cigar is at a golf course.  Monster Productions, Inc. (MPI), an event production company based in Roselle, Illinois, is addressing these inequities by hosting Stogies & Bogies – a smokin’ hot cigar show and golf event with a 1920’s theme. Curbing prohibition for one day, the event will feature multiple show sessions with two ticket options:  show attendance only, or a combination golf / show package.  Consumers can choose to spend the entire day or a portion of the day!

This unique event will take place on Thursday, June 11, 2009 at Oak Brook Hills Marriott Resort in the Chicago suburb of Oak Brook.  Golfers of every skill level will savor a fine cigar on the beautiful course at the Willow Crest Golf Club located in Oak Brook, enjoy a buffet meal before golfing, and attend the Show following their choice of morning or afternoon shotgun golf.  Golfers will also have the opportunity to win a new car in the Hole-In-One Contest sponsored by Biggers Auto Group.

Whether consumers choose to golf or just attend the show, all ticket holders will enjoy fine wine and spirits, sample the luscious cuisine of local restaurants, check out the latest in cigar and golf accessories, and walk away with samples from the finest cigar makers.  Cigars can be enjoyed with a favorite beverage at the Speakeasy Lounge or on The Patio.

Stogies & Bogies tickets are limited, and went on sale September 1st.  For more detailed information, or to purchase tickets, visit the event website www.StogiesandBogies.com, or contact Pam Lohman, Event Manager, at 630.351.3976 ext 226. A portion of ticket sales will benefit GiGi’s Playhouse, Down Syndrome Awareness Centers located throughout the Chicago area.  Monster Productions, Inc. is a member of CIGAR RIGHTS OF AMERICA

Casanova’s Latest Masterpiece Wednesday, Jul 23 2008

If you remember a while back I posted about a gentleman with an amazing talent.  His name is Brad Casanova and he is an amazing wood worker and a cigar enthusiast.  He has created several carvings of cigar bands for his own personal collection.  Well, he was recently commissioned by Camacho Cigars to create a carving of the Camacho Corojo 10th Anniversary cigar band which was to be hung at the Corona Cigar Company in Orlando, FL.  This is what the band looks like…

320x240

He has completed the carving and his new masterpiece is hanging on the wall at the Corona Cigar Co. now.  You can see pictures of his amazing work on his blog.  Just surf on over to Casanova Cigar Carvings and check it out.  You’ll be amazed by this piece and by the many other incredible works of art he has created.

Fantastic work Brad!

Keepers of the Flame have posted the first in a series of side by side reviews of the entire Padron Series of cigars. This first installment is of the new 7000. The Padron 7000 Natural and Maduro are compared side by side with contributions from Brian at Stogie Review and Doc of StogieFresh. It’s a great read and a great start to this project. Head on over and check it out, and keep an eye out for my contributions to this projects as well.

CRA – Cigar Rights of America Wednesday, Jun 4 2008

Photobucket

I ran across this press release today. A new organization has been formed to defend the rights of cigar smokers. I think it’s a great idea and some big industry names are behind this thing. I hope time proves that this organization can be effective. As is the norm when these types of organizations launch, the announcement is a bit preachy, but everything it says is legitimate. See the press release below…

Oh, and if anyone from the CRA happens to see this post… Lose the sultry, cigar smoking woman from your website banner. In my opinion it hurts the credibility of the organization. I know sex sells, but but I don’t think it fits or is appropriate in this context.

CIGAR RIGHTS OF AMERICA ANNOUNCES THE FORMATION OF THE GRASSROOTS NON-PROFIT ASSOCIATION OF CIGAR ENTHUSIASTS TO FIGHT TOBACCO TAX INCREASES AND SMOKING BANS.

Los Angeles, May 30, 2008

FIGHTING TO PROTECT YOUR FREEDOM TO ENJOY CIGARS

“Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness”
“Land of the Free”
“No Taxation Without Representation”

These are the principles on which America was founded. Unfortunately for cigar enthusiasts, the age-old pleasure of enjoying a cigar is under attack. On a daily basis, your freedom to enjoy a cigar is being stripped away by an overzealous, anti-smoking movement. Their tactics are varied; be it through supporting onerous cigar taxes or lobbying government for restrictive smoking bans. The anti-smoking movement will stop at nothing short of the complete prohibition of tobacco.

The Constitution of the United States ensures that all men and women have the freedom and the right to the pursuit of happiness. Unfortunately, cigar enthusiasts have slowly allowed these rights to be removed. Over the past twenty years, the anti-tobacco movement has broadened their reach and scope and are moving towards abolishing ALL forms of tobacco including cigars. Until recently there has essentially been very little organized opposition to their actions. And why should there have been? Most of us assumed that their attention was directed towards cigarettes.

Unfortunately, we were wrong.

Forty-seven states in America have enacted cigar taxes. Some states have gone as far as taxing cigars at a rate of 75%. Currently, the entire cigar industry is threatened by the Federal Government’s State Children’s Health Insurance Plan (SCHIP) that threatens to increase the Federal cigar tax by as much as 6,000% (no this is not a typo). If it were not for President Bush ’s veto of the bill proposed by the House and Senate last fall, cigar enthusiasts would currently be paying exorbitantly high prices for the cigars they enjoy so much and nearly every cigar shop in America would have been forced out of business. The proposed bill, which will tax cigars to fund SCHIP, is not dead yet. After the House and Senate reconvene in September, they will again attempt to increase the Federal tax on cigars to expand the State Children’s Health Insurance Plan.

In addition to a tax increase on cigars, regularly introduced anti-smoking legislation has made it close to impossible for cigar enthusiasts to enjoy cigars. In many states, you are not allowed to enjoy a cigar at your local restaurant or bar. Cities around America are now proposing bans which will, if enacted, stop you from enjoying a cigar outside of public buildings. Who would have thought that the day would come when you cannot legally enjoy a cigar walking down the beach or sitting in your local park?

A number of manufacturers and retailers of the U.S. cigar industry have sponsored the formation of Cigar Rights of America (CRA). The founding sponsors of CRA are:

Arturo Fuente
Ashton Cigars
Camacho Cigars
Corona Cigar Company
Cusano Cigars
Davidoff
Drew Estate
General Cigar
God of Fire
Humidipak
J.C. Newman Cigar Co.
La Aurora
La Flor Dominicana

A Must Read for any Cigar Fan Monday, Feb 18 2008

Dan of New Havana Cigars details on his blog a trip he took to Esteli with Pete Johnson. He tells a great story in wonderful detail of his meeting Pepin and Jamie Garcia, and of all the great stuff he saw, smoked, and experienced. There is some good insider info in there about some new smokes on the way from those guys.

A Contest for you Cigar Reviewers Thursday, Dec 20 2007

If you like to write about your cigars surf on over to Cigar Inspector. They are holding a cigar review contest. I believe it will end on or around the 14th of January. I hope I’m over this cold in time to do a review for it. You can win a very nice ST Dupont X-Tend lighter if your review is selected as the winner.

Support Your Local Tobacconist Friday, Dec 7 2007

My house (which contains two young children that attend daycare/preschool) has had a rough time with illnesses in the past few weeks. I myself was hit by two bugs in a row and that has put me way behind on my cigar reviews. I feel I am on the upswing but it may be a week or so before I get another review done. This got me to thinking what I could do on the blog in the mean time because the interval since my last post has been a bit longer than I usually like it to be. I have been reading all my favorite bogs while I’ve been under the weather. Cigar Jack has been running an interesting feature on his blog in which he reviews cigar manufacturers’ websites. It’s an excellent idea and I have enjoyed reading the articles. His recent post about the Perdomo website indirectly sparked a bit of inspiration for this post to help fill the void until I can smoke again.

Internet Cigar Retailers and the Local Brick & Mortar Tobacconists.

The business of selling cigars over the internet is a big one. There are a large number of HUGE internet cigar retailers that move a lot of product for the cigar manufacturers. That’s because there are a lot of cigar smokers out there who hit the internet looking for a good price on their favorite smokes. And why not? Right? Everyone likes to save a buck. Most of us aren’t rich enough to go blowing money without pause or concern, and the fact is a lot of rich guys are rich because they know how to save (and spend) money. The fact is the best prices on cigars are almost always to be found on the internet. The internet vendors have a lot of built in advantages over the local B&M shops. Often people can purchase cigars and avoid large local tobacco taxes. They have huge humidors that can house enormous selections and they have the audience to support such diversity in product. That large audience also leads to large volumes of sales which in turn earn the internet vendors leverage with the manufacturers to get price breaks and exclusive lines made just for their businesses. All things that help them keep prices down, and selection up. There is also a convenience factor with ordering online. These are all things the little local shop has a hard time competing with. I would ask that you not forget about your local shop and give them your business whenever possible.

I’m not trying to vilify the internet vendors. The internet vendors are great. They provide us with access to cigars we may otherwise be unable to get. There are times when you are going to buy online. The reasons are varied and I won’t enumerate them all here. Everyone’s reasons may be a little different. Maybe you don’t have a local shop to go to. Well, then you need the internet guys and God Bless them for being there for those of you in that situation. A prime example for me is CigarsDirect.com. Obviously I use them. The God of Fire cigars I posted pictures of in an earlier post were purchased from CigarsDirect. My local shop will most likely never have God of Fire in stock, nor Opus X much to the owner’s frustration. CigarsDirect is great for that hard to find stuff. My local also doesn’t stock Padilla because they don’t sell well but I like some of their lines. To get that stuff I have to go online. I am not suggesting we should stop using internet vendors. Internet vendors and local tobacconists can co-exist. Like I said, I’ve used online shops in the past. I’ll use them in the future. I am just asking that you not forget local tobacconist. Give them your business whenever you can even if it means paying a little more. Here’s why…

Your local cigar shop is selling you more than just a cigar, or cutter, or humidor, etc. You’ll notice above I said you will often find the best prices online. What I did not say is that you’ll find the best deals online. In my opinion. your best deal is most often at your local shop. How’s that you wonder? You can get your favorite cigar cheaper online you say? That may be true but in my opinion it’s not necessarily the best deal and here is why.

When you buy a cigar at your local cigar shop you are getting a lot more than just a cigar. You are also [usually] getting a place where you can go to sit and smoke and enjoy your cigars. Even before these smoking bans started sweeping the country it was hard for a cigar smoker to find a place in public where he could go to smoke a cigar. [I could write five pages on the hypocrisy of allowing cigarettes and not cigars but that’s not what this article is about]The local cigar shop has always filled this function nicely. In a lot of cases it does so especially well. If you have a really good local shop there is often a TV with a game on and a fridge in the back with some drinks in it. Combine that with a comfortable chair or cushy leather couch and you’re on cloud nine. Sounds good right? But wait there’s more! If you call now and mention this TV offer we will throw in… Sorry. I think Billy Mays, the OxyClean guy possessed me for a moment. But you do get more than just a place to smoke. You get a whole community of cigar smokers and experts to talk and interact with. A lot of local shops have a group of “regulars” that hang out around the shop. That combined with what is hopefully a knowledgeable staff in the store combines to make a great community of guys and gals that you can socialize with and discuss cigars with. One of the greatest aspects of this hobby is the social component. Cigar smoking and collecting is a very social activity, especially if you want it to be. I have spent many a Wednesday night at my local shop smoking cigars a shooting the bull with the great guys who frequent the place. We watch sporting events, and talk about cigars, women, family, work, politics, spirits, food, etc, etc., etc… You get the idea. It’s just a great time. That is what, in my mind, justifies paying a slightly higher price for my smokes. I want to send as much of my business to my local shop as I can, because I would hate to lose it. I want to make sure that I do my part to keep that place there so I can continue to enjoy the friends and community that it provides. The great thing about these communities that build around these shops is that they are so easy to become a part of. Membership to the club is open to anyone who wants to come in and take a seat. Cigar smokers are some of the friendliest and most accepting people I know. When I started hanging out at my local shop, I didn’t know anyone there. I just showed up one night, sat down and joined in the conversation. Years later I still go out there most weeks (two kids since I started going there has made me a little less of a regular attendee) and enjoy the company of guys I now call my friends.

I glossed over it a bit when I started talking about community, but the staff of the cigar shop is another big part of this. A shop with a friendly knowledgeable staff should not be taken for granted. In fact, you should make a point to make use of them. Talk to the staff and get to know them and let them get to know you. They are on the “inside” of the industry. They often have lots of news and background info on the different cigars and manufacturers that is fun to hear about. Also, if they get to know you and what you smoke, they can often help point you in the direction of some great cigars that you may have never otherwise discovered on your own. The staff of your local tobacconist is a great resource and one that you should take advantage of. The face-to-face service they can provide you while you are in their store really is valuable. The guys working at my local shop have even introduced me to some of the sales reps for the manufacturers. Those guys are great to talk to as well. Sometimes they’ll even hand you some free swag or cigars after talking with you. I have been lucky enough to become friends with some cigar reps. I really enjoy talking cigars with these guys. They know their stuff and are full of great stories.

Frequenting my local cigar shop has enhanced my enjoyment of cigars and this hobby in an almost immeasurable way. The same could happen for you. I hope I’ve shown how you really do get more than just a cigar with the money you spend with your local tobacconist. That’s what makes the price a good deal. Keep those favorite online vendors bookmarked. You’ll need them on occasion. Just be sure to go out to your local shop, buy and cigar, sit down and light up. Don’t get too wrapped up in what the price of the cigar is. What you get for that extra dollar you spend on the cigar is money well spent. In fact, it may be the best deal on a cigar that you’ll find.
